Sam Mercer · Porthaven

Sam Mercer is the pen name of a novelist who would rather speak through his characters than about himself. He writes about people who begin with nothing — about ambition, origins, friendship, and the price that success quietly asks in return.

His debut, Porthaven Boy, is a sweeping rags-to-riches saga set in a damp harbour town in the English South West: the story of a boy who could never read a book, but could read people — and rose from the market stalls to an empire.

With the Bayonne Trilogy, opening with Morel and the Gentlemen of Bayonne, he carries that same defiant spirit to the French Basque Country — a starving orphan who turns an abandoned garden into a trading empire for ordinary people, and pays for it in a decades-long war with three powerful men.

Mercer travels to find his stories. A harbour at dusk, a market at first light, a face in a crowd — the places and people he meets abroad become the grain of his fiction: observed, scribbled into notebooks, carried for years until they turn into characters. He writes by hand and on an old typewriter, far from the noise.

His books share one quiet belief: that where you come from is not where you have to stay.
